Spring 2008

I'd intended to put Book STEPs up for sale in the beginning of the 2008. But my plans were thwarted when I took on an editing job for Small World Publishing - a job supposed to take 5 days dragged on through February.

But I'm back on the case now. And so, here's the advert you may see appearing in environmental magazines and newsletters throughout Ireland and the UK in the coming month.  And, if you're interested, you'll find the 'further details' here.

Needless to say I'm sad to be saying goodbye to Book STEPs - it's given me a great deal of pleasure and inspiration through the years. But at the same time I'm looking forward to a more independent future.

In the meantime, it's Business As Usual for the next few months, with plenty new books added this month and more to come next.  And I'll email again in June to let you know what's happening.

December 2007

And our major news for the month is that I’ll be putting Book STEPs up for sale in the new year – the shop needs to be in a bigger town or attached to an environmental organisation and, as I’ve no desire to leave this beautiful area, I’ve concluded that Book STEPs will have to move without me. After six years at this labour of love it’s been hard to make the decision - Book STEPs is my baby in so many ways and I’ve loved providing Solutions To Environmental Problems in this way. However, as I’ve only just come to this conclusion, and because this season is particularly mad in the shop (bah, humbug) I’ll not be doing anything about it until the new year. And Book STEPs will certainly be located here till the end of February. [Update: actually May 2008]

After that, who knows? I’m afraid I’m going to be fussy about who I sell to and if I can’t find a suitable, ethical buyer there’s a new eco-shop, warehouse & visitor centre, Eco-op Ireland (setting up as I write this) who’re very interested in hosting the shop. They’re in Borrisoleigh, Co Tipperary, near to Tipperary Insititute and are already stocking a vaste array of organic and hemp products (you can expect to see their new website appearing early in the new year). So Book STEPs will live on. But I am assuming there’s likely to be glitches during whatever changeover occurs so Book Tokens are valid till February - if you’re buying any for friends do let them know!

As for me, I’m going to get a ‘proper’ job that I can forget about when I go home. And no voluntary work (apart from kitten fostering, of course) … for a wee while anyway. I’ll no doubt be involved in producing the new edition of the West Cork Green Directory (won’t be able to help myself, I’m so proud of the first one!). And when Book STEPs moves out, the shop in Bantry will be available to rent and I’ll continue living above it – so you’ll be able to contact me at the same address for the foreseeable future.

But for the next few months it’s business as usual, and if you’re placing orders this month do let me know if you need delivery for Christmas, or any other particular date, and I’ll email you right back to confirm availability.

I haven't had time to update these newspages in a very long time - and so much has happened!  We're at the middle of October and since I last wrote there is a great deal of water under the bridge - if you're interested in the trials and tribulations of running a small, environmental, ethical bookshop read on ... I'll try and keep it succinct as possible...

January and February 2007 saw us reorganising Book STEPs shop, little realising how long it would take and how exhausting it would be.  But with the help of some wordscannotbegintodescribehowsplendid splendid volunteers (Linda, Noah, Pete, Jason, Jenny, Freddie to name but a few, heartfelt thanks to all) 4 High Street, Bantry was transmogrified into a rather excellent space where it's a delight to browse.  Our beautiful new desk, made from beautiful, local wood and donated by Mike at Future Forests, gives a warm welcome to all comers and our new shelving means books and products are more accessible and easy to find. ENFO (Ireland's public information service on environmental matters) were a huge support, giving us two display cases to hold a whole host of their excellent (and free) information sheets, and with enough room to hold plenty flyers from local environmental organisations - allowing Book STEPs to fulfil it's role as local environmental information provider without too much headache.  And ENFO ordered a huge range of books from us for their already comprehensive environmental library based in Dublin. We think they're great!

To be honest early 2007 was a nightmare - with the stress of reorganisation combined with the computer blowing a gasket everything felt like it was going to hell in a handbasket. It's a bit late in the day for this but we would like to sincerely apologise to anyone who didn't hear back from us during that time and the following month - the upheaval put us back by a good month, emails went walkabout when the computer died and it feels like we're still catching up.

And all this meant that we had to take a step back and seriously look at how Book STEPs was run ... or not. In 2006 I'd initiated a local environmental group, SEE Ltd (now Sustain West Cork).  We'd held a very successful local inspirational, informational and entertaining event on the back of the book Hard Rain.  We'd produced the rather excellent West Cork Green Directory, starting with Book STEPs comprehensive database of organisations and researching from there.  And we'd made great headway into planning the Sustain West Cork Weekend which was launched to great acclaim by Christy Moore and Mark Edwards in Bantry this August.  And, quite honestly, as a result Book STEPs had been neglected.  So we girded our loins and decided to step back from SEE and to commit all our energy towards Book STEPs - no more voluntary work, at least until April 2008, the shop's third birthday and Book STEPs sixth year.  Make or break.

So we came out the other side of the winter with our heads held high and supremely grateful to everyone who helped us get there - so many people were so supportive - you know who you are - thank you, the kettle's always on for you (on the stove that is, not plugged in!).

We sat down and worked out there's 6 weeks work to be done every month (and perhaps this is the time to highlight that when I use the term 'we' I'm actually talking about me, the shop and the cats).  So somehow I need to find someone to do 2 weeks worth of work for me monthly.  But with no money to pay them.  So I determined to find time to look in FAS, Work Start and volunteers... Other plans included new php webpages - currently it takes me about 10 days to manually update the books and webpages every month (which is why I've not done it in so long) - a php site would reduce that to 3 or 4 days.  But I don't have the €2000 needed so that was shelved for the moment.  Mad really, the new pages would decrease workload and increase sales but I've neither the money nor the time to set up the new pages that would increase my income and time. Confused? I certainly was/am?!?

Then March and April were spent trying to sort out finances and generally trying to keep it all together - we managed to add a whole host of new books to the web pages but didn't quite get round to emailing everyone with the details.  Oh well.  And more support came in from friends and well wishers as we started taking in second hand and rare books to fill our newfound space.  Of necessity we're only putting rare books on the webpages so you'll have to drop in to us to see our whole selection.

I'm not sure what happened in May and June - I think the sun came out and our hearts lifted.  Certainly early in 2007 Lily De Sylva started volunteering on Fridays and helped with orders in and out and generally keeping the shop and window displays under control.  Once again a volunteer has helped enormously and, in the process, has turned into a good friend and kept me sane.

And round about then my determination to stop the voluntary work faltered as I found myself helping Jennifer Carroll of the Animal Care Society (ACS) with their Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) programme in West Cork.  You may or may not know that I've been fostering cats and kittens for the ACS for over four years now.  Very rewarding and very small scale till recently - see some of the stories here (keeping in mind the front page still describes my old house).  We hadn't realised that neutering cat colonies would inevitably mean rescuing kittens - I ended up fostering 23 cats and kittens during July & August and my life outside of Book STEPs suddenly seemed to revolve around feeding, cleaning litter trays, medication and laundry. Getting a bit stressed again...

So we searched for and found a number of other splendid foster homes - thanks to the very wonderful Starrett family, Lorna & Frank and Sandy & family.  And now I'm down to seven foster kittens, two adults and the three permanent residents in my place while at the same time keeping a track of the 15 other kittens we have fostered out.

So September found me & Book STEPs slightly frazzled round the edges again. But hope was around the corner as Lily (who also works at the National Learning Network garden centre) networked Dick Page into two days a week here through Work Start.  Unfortunately Dick only made it in for 2 weeks of the 4 before having to leave due to his cat allergy (don't laugh!).  But in those 2 weeks he was an enormous help - and I've caught up enough to get on with these webpages and, hopefully, the next enewsletter over the coming days.  Next week we'll look further into other Work Start opportunities and then, who knows...

And now we're in October already.  And I just got an email from one of my ethical suppliers, Seven Generations, previously ecologic books, who're closing down because they can't compete with the less ethical businesses. As they say:

"...we're sad to be leaving you all but feel we have no choice as the big businesses have become too powerful for us to survive financially. I think that is something society is going to have to look carefully at over the next couple of years before we lose all our small independent bookstores and businesses."

And I'm sad too.  Because in my reorganisations in the beginning of the year I realised that if I wanted to survive I had to use one big supplier where possible instead of using the small, ethical suppliers I'd built up a rapport with over the years. Using one meant loads of time saved on ordering, paperwork and accounts and the smaller companies couldn't afford to give me large discounts or to pay postage like the larger company could. I wanted to buy ethically but I couldn't afford the time or money - Catch 22.  And so I've contributed to the demise of a wonderful company. And I could so very easily go the same way as them - it takes so much more time and energy (and often money!) to live and shop ethically, especially with little incentive apart from the ethics of the whole thing - who can blame people from buying from Amazon or their local Waterstones with the bargains and convenience they can offer.

At the end of the day small organisations like myself and Seven Generations are going to disappear if we don't take the time, energy and money to shop ethically.  See here for more information on ethical consumerism or check out The Good Shopping Guide - available at Book STEPs, Amazon and your local large book store - where are you going to buy it?

So here we are.  October already. Time to light the burner and coorie in for the winter. A wee bit wiser since the beginning of the year and full of plans for the coming months.  We've some new environmental products in the pipeline for next month so keep your eyes peeled.  And I guess it's time I faced my accounts...

Thanks again to everyone who's supported us through our ups and downs.

That's it for now.

Upcoming Events

Towards the end of 2004 we found the busyness of Book STEPs was preventing us from taking our stall out and about as much as we'd like.

Despite this we're always interested hearing about green events throughout Ireland.

So...  If you'd like Book STEPs to appear at an event you're hosting or attending, or if you'd just like to advertise your event on our webpages, we'd be delighted to hear from you. Just contact us

We'd very much like to include such events in our listing for your information whether we can attend or not but I'm afraid the opening of the shop has sporadified updates for the present.  We'll still try to add events when we can but it will be a bit hit and miss.  Check out events we've attended and events we've highlighted.

We vary the stock we have in the shop and take to events so if you're thinking of coming along and want to look at a particular book, let us know in advance so we can be sure to have it available.
