Here's where we tell you about the crème de la crème of our latest discoveries.

Note:  Books go in and out of print all the time.  As a result prices and availability of books listed on earlier pages may have changed.

We've four books of particular interest this month.  Two are wonderful books that I've been trying to source for a while now and finally found a supplier - John Soper's informative and practical Bio-Dynamic Gardening and Jean Giono's inspiring The Man Who Planted Trees.  I've included the classic text Ancient Woodland by Oliver Rackham - it's been out of print for a while and has finally been reprinted.  And last, but by no means least, GAP Ballymun, Dublin have published their experiences of community involvement in eco-projects - I'm always delighted to find local publications and, as Simon was kind enough to give me a detailed run down on the Dublin GAP programme when I visited a while ago, I'm especially pleased to see the appearance of The Ballymun Eco Book.

Ancient Woodland €105.00
Its History and Uses in England
Oliver Rackham
Since its publication in 1980 Oliver Rackham’s book, described by D L Wigston as `this monumental text,` has been the definitive work on the subject and an essential tool for the historical ecologist.

The first edition has proved to be a major contribution to British vegetation ecology. It has been obligatory reading for scientists working on any aspect (ecological, botanical, zoological, pedological, geographical, etc.) of the woodland types described in the book. Of equal importance was the way it illuminated for historical geographers the extent and nature of woodlands in medieval and Tudor England, and the groundbreaking work on the economic and social history of woods, viewed by Wigston as `unique in style and subject matter.`

This is a new, extended edition, bringing to fruition nearly 23 years of additional research by Oliver Rackham. The result is 9 new chapters, an updated and extended bibliography, while over 240 colour photographs, and more than 80 new diagrams and charts enhance the original, pioneering text.

The first edition’s 24 chapters have been reproduced in situ page for page, although the typeface has changed and small typographical errors corrected, original diagrams, maps and tables have been rendered more clearly. Most of the original black and white photographs are now in colour and 14 pages of new colour illustrations have been inserted. Almost all original chapters also have an additional colour photograph and some explanatory text added to their final page. The 9 new chapters contain over 135 new colour illustrations. The expanded Index merges these new chapters and the bibliography has been augmented to include recent work.

The new chapters comprise :-

25. Woodland Vegetation: Stability or Change? 26. On Coppicing Plants. 27. Elmwoods: What has become of them? 28. Trees and Ancient Buildings. 29. Windblow and the Great Storms. 30. Species and Area: are small woods impoverished? 31 Types of Ancient Woodland: can any advance be made? 32. Wildwood and the Origins of Woodland, Wood-Pasture, and Savanna. 33. Conservation and the Future.

Man Who Planted Trees, The €10.45
Jean Giono, Norma L Goodrich (Contributor), Michael McCurdy (Ill)
In his wonderful story of Elzéard Bouffier, an imaginary yet wholly believable shepherd, Jean Giono perhaps hoped to inspire a reafforestation programme that would renew the whole earth.

The story – both parable and manual – opposes the tree-planter, the earth-husband, to the makers of war. At the same time it shows us all that is best in man`s relationship with nature, and with his fellow man.

For Giono, nature is a living force in which man can rediscover the depth and harmony he has lost in urban life. Michael McCurdy`s beautiful woodcuts, which accompany the text, have helped establish this book as a minor classic.

‘This is a lovely, poignant little book by one of the most distinguished 20th-century French writers.’ Sunday Times

‘Michael McCurdy`s gentle woodcuts enhance this haunting little 1950s tale . . . a version of pastoral, regenerating a whole landscape and community.’ Observer

JEAN GIONO (1895-1971) is among the most distinguished of French writers. He wrote more than thirty novels, as well as many short stories, plays, poetry, essays and film scripts. Many of his books have been translated into English.

MICHAEL MCCURDY is one of America`s outstanding wood engravers and a noted book designer.
